Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
