Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
